During the first few years of online advertisements, ads displayed in different websites vary from each other. In one, you'll see an ad for a school, on the other a diet kit, and on another one is a medicine for bigger masculine tower.

But recent developments has made it possible for a single ad to stalk you wherever and whatever website you browse. This online ad technology is called 'remarketing' or 'retargeting'.

The first remarketing technique employed in online ads is called behavioral targeting. Generally, ads will follow you based on the websites you visit frequently.

For instance, if you visit the FIFA.com frequently, you will be 'tagged' as a football fan, and thus your browser will display football-related ads.

Another remarketing strategy is called personalized targeting. This kind of retargeting is more pervasive and more active in stalking you, not to mention more precised.

When you visit online shopping websites such as Amazon or Buy.com, and click on a product that interests you the most, a cooking will be stored in your computer. And when you visit other websites, an ad for that specific product will be replicated, like it's trying to convince you to buy it. It's so good at stalking many people actually find it creepy.

Lawmakers have been alarmed by reports of consumers getting stalked with ads, and are paranoid that their privacy is getting violated. Regulating these online ad practices is a hot topic at the federal level.
