As more people get connected to the Internet, the more important the password becomes as a piece of information. There are more secure ways of protecting the information of individuals, but this is the most cost-effective way available to the general public.

Unforunately, not all websites that we have passwords for are safe and active in ensuring that our privacy is protected. There are a lot of smart people out there with questionable motives. If websites like the PSP Network's security can be breached, then what more with less important and less proprietary websites? Therefore, the responsibility to ensure our password's safety also lies in ourselves.

First, choose passwords that are not easily cracked. Studies show that the most common passwords used are "password" and "12345." This means that you can crack a good number of online accounts using only these passwords. Avoid using this, as well as dictionary words because some hackers use dictionary attack in order to get the information that you need. It's best to use a combination of numbers, small letters, and capitalized letters when picking a password.

Next, have the habit of regularly changing your passwords. A safe time period would be two months. This ensures that, if your password is exposed, it won't be valid anymore in the future. Accounts that are not in use should also be closed down. These are burdens that may be used in order to crack your active accounts as we all have the tendency to have a few passwords for multiple online accounts.

Lastly, do not write down your passwords in post-it notes! It isn't only the online threats that you should look out for when protecting your passwords, but also those threats around you as well. You may trust your peers with all your heart, but who knows who might be looking at your computer without your permission?
