Privacy and SurveillanceThe Buzz on Google's Net Neutrality
Net Neutrality have been existing for quite a long time already, but it was only at the dawn of the 21st century when the term became popular, the time people consider to be the peak of the internet with the rise of web giants such as Google. Net Neutrality mainly argues about giving the users a non-restricted, subscribed level of internet access. Fast forward to today, Google decided to publicly advocate Net Neutrality and came up with an agreement with Verizon. The proposal, while logical to think Google drafted for the betterment of the web service quality, gathered criticisms. Here's my cheese on the issue. Google apparently has really nice ideas with their proposal. One of the better idea included in the proposal is giving the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) a limited power on the issue, instead of giving them the whole floor to take over. With this, a case to case consumer protection can be achieved. But the part that troubles the public about the proposal is that wireless networks should be treated in a different way for Net Neutrality. Google and Verizon wanted to maintain a level of restriction for wireless networks instead of giving them the same treatment for wired networks. Wireless computing is the current trend and I see why people are annoyed of this part of the proposal. Google is taking the issue seriously and have even dedicated a page for Eric Schmidt's Net Neutrality letter. http://www.google.com/help/netneutrality_letter.html
