The controversial anti-piracy bill known as the Protect IP just got an OK from the Senate, following close expectations from the public.
The Protect IP Bill served as a unification force for both the Democratic and Republican Senators. It wasn't an extremely rare thing for them to go in chorus for the same bill, but it wasn't a normal thing either. Aside from rival parties supporting the bill, some of the biggest private industries expressed their support for it, including those in the trade of film and music. The Protect IP Bill gives the government the power to shut down, or at least block, websites they deem infringing on other's intellectual property rights. The orders could be serve either on search engines, DNS providers or on financial and advertising firms related to that particular website. They then will be asked to sever any relationship with the said website or give them a sudden death if possible. Most critics, including those from Google executive Eric Schmidt suggests that the bill would give the government unnecessary and scary rights to shut down websites that disapproves with the government's way of executing things, simply by branding them copyright pirates. The Protect IP Bill must still overcome the opposition from Sen. Ron Wyden who expressed his strong opposition to the bill, saying he understand the goal of the bill, but he will not 'muzzle' speech and stifle innovation in order to achieve these goals.
